Shepherd of Our School Year : 12 Blessings to Guide Our Children

Shepherd of Our School Year

As a new academic year begins, parents, teachers, and communities seek strength and guidance to support our children. This prayer, Shepherd of Our School Year: 12 Blessings to Guide Our Children, is written as a call-and-response, inspired by Psalm 23. It serves as both a spiritual blessing and a practical reminder of the values and virtues that nurture our children—focus, empathy, adaptability, responsibility, and wisdom.

Whether used in a family devotion, a school assembly, or a church service, this prayer invites us to journey together, trusting God as the Shepherd of our school year.

A Call-and-Response Prayer for a New Academic Year

Leader: The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.
Congregation: Thank You, Lord, for guiding us through the holidays with joy and peace.

Leader: You make us lie down in green pastures and lead us beside still waters.
Congregation: We thank You for safety, health, and happy moments at home, school, and play.

Leader: You restore our souls and lead us in paths of righteousness.
Congregation: Nurture our children at home, in school, and in our community with love and wisdom.

Leader: Even though we walk through new classrooms and changing friendships…
Congregation: Guide their hearts through every transition, hormone change, or challenge they face.

Leader: You prepare a table before us in the presence of every test and project.
Congregation: Bless them to excel in learning, games, arts, and every good endeavour.

Leader: You anoint their heads with oil; their cups overflow with knowledge and grace.
Congregation: Help them be responsible, respected, and inclusive in all they do.

Leader: Surely Your goodness will keep them from harmful habits and addictions.
Congregation: Protect their minds from any imbalance and guide them to speak to the right adult when needed.

Leader: You lead them in focus, integrity, adaptability, and initiative.
Congregation: Teach them to communicate well, show empathy, collaborate, and lead with humility.

Leader: You fill their hearts with curiosity and creativity.
Congregation: Grow in them sense-making, critical thinking, and wisdom for the digital world.

Leader: Your rod and Your staff, they comfort them in every season.
Congregation: Give peace to all parents, teachers, and carers, guiding them daily.

Leader: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow our children all the days of their lives.
Congregation: And they will dwell in Your love, learning and thriving, now and always.

Leader: We seal this school year in the name of Jesus.
Congregation: Amen and Amen!

💭 Why These 12 Blessings Matter

Each line of this prayer reflects a need children face today—academic pressures, social changes, digital challenges, and personal growth. By declaring these 12 blessings, we are not only covering them in prayer but also reminding ourselves of the collective responsibility to guide, nurture, and inspire.

When we call God the Shepherd of Our School Year, we affirm that no child journeys alone. With faith, guidance, and community, our children can thrive academically, emotionally, and spiritually.
