Science and Mathematics Careers: Explore Roles and Verify Current Routes

Research science and mathematics career clusters, verify current qualifications and build evidence before choosing your next step.

Science and mathematics can lead into research, laboratories, data, education, industry, technology, public services and many other settings. These fields overlap with engineering, computing, health, environment and manufacturing, so a job-family page should help you explore connections rather than force a single pathway.

A subject does not equal a career, and a personality description does not determine suitability. Analytical thinking, accuracy, curiosity, practical investigation, communication or problem-solving may matter in different combinations depending on the role. The role evidence should tell you what actually matters.

Example role clusters

  • Biological and life sciences: laboratory, biology, biotechnology, microbiology and related research or technical roles.
  • Chemistry and materials: chemistry, materials, formulation, laboratory and process-related work.
  • Food science and technology: product, quality, laboratory and technical roles connected with food and drink.
  • Mathematics, statistics and data: mathematical, statistical, operational-research, analytical and data-focused roles.
  • Physics and physical sciences: physics, geophysics, laboratory, measurement and related technical work.
  • Science education and communication: teaching, learning, technical communication and public-engagement roles where current requirements support that route.

Verify the current route

  1. Choose a specific role or cluster. “Science” is too broad to define a qualification route.
  2. Read current role profiles. Compare duties, work settings, qualifications, progression and any professional requirements.
  3. Check the organisation that owns the requirement. Degrees, apprenticeships, licences, registration and specialist training can differ by occupation and can change.
  4. Map your existing evidence. Projects, experiments, data work, laboratory activity, study, employment or volunteering can all provide relevant evidence when they genuinely match the role.
  5. Test the direction proportionately. A conversation, short project, work experience, course taster or targeted application may answer the next question before a major commitment is made.
