DIY FOCUS self-directed career learning

Five strands. Fifteen guided articles. One clearer career conversation.

FOCUS is SCP’s five-part career information model. This pathway reconnects the original 15-part DIY learning journey: three guided articles for each FOCUS strand, supported by deeper resource collections and a reflection quiz. You can work through all fifteen or start with the strand that matches your current question.

How to use DIY FOCUS

Begin with the question you actually have.

FOCUS is not a rigid sequence. You may begin with Communication while preparing for an interview, return to Find Yourself to strengthen your evidence, then use Opportunities and Use Information to test whether a role genuinely fits.

DIY FOCUS learning journey

All 15 guided articles at a glance

These are the preserved FOCUS learning routes from the original 15-day pathway, now linked directly to their current canonical pages. Use them as a learning pathway, not as personalised advice. Keep notes on what you learn, what evidence you already have and what you still need to verify.

FOCUS 01

Find Yourself

What matters to me, and what can I already bring?

Explore identity, lived experience, strengths, values, interests, confidence, learning preferences and transferable capability. This strand helps you describe yourself with evidence rather than labels or guesswork.

Evidence you can build

  • Strengths and values summary
  • Transferable-skills evidence
  • Learning and confidence reflection

How do I explain my value clearly and credibly?

Develop the evidence and language needed for CVs, applications, interviews, networking, presentations and professional conversations. Communication is not performance alone; it is clear, relevant and supportable articulation.

Evidence you can build

  • Evidence-led CV statements
  • Interview examples

FOCUS 04

Use Information

What evidence do I need before choosing?

Evidence you can build

  • Verified source list
  • Requirements checklist
  • Evidence-based comparison

What is the next responsible step?

Turn reflection and research into a realistic action: a conversation, learning activity, application, interview, work-readiness step or transition plan. Starting should be proportionate to evidence, readiness and context.

Evidence you can build

  • First-step action plan
  • Application or preparation checklist

Connected but distinct

FOCUS organises career information; other SCP resources support different needs.

Use SCOPE when the situation is still difficult to articulate. SparkZone supports earlier exploration, while PAVRA coordinates structured youth transition. Use the Coaching Frameworks library when a wider reflective-development model is needed, and Meta-Skills resources to strengthen adaptable capabilities across learning, work and life.

Use FOCUS responsibly

FOCUS is not a psychometric assessment, diagnosis, automated recommendation or promise of a perfect career match. It supports reflection, research and preparation while leaving accountable judgement with the person and the appropriate human professionals.
