Finance Careers: Research Roles, Evidence and Current Requirements

Finance covers a wide range of work involving money, financial information, customers, risk, transactions, reporting and commercial decision-making. Roles can sit inside specialist financial-services organisations or within the finance functions of employers in many other sectors.

Numeracy, communication or an interest in business does not by itself make finance the right career choice. Different roles require different evidence, working styles, technical knowledge and, in some cases, current professional or regulatory requirements.

Example role clusters

• Accounting and finance operations: accounts support, bookkeeping, management accounting, financial reporting and related finance-team roles.
• Banking and customer financial services: customer service, branch or digital banking operations, lending support and financial-services administration.
• Analysis, risk and controls: financial analysis, credit, risk, compliance-support, audit-support and control-focused roles.
• Insurance: claims, underwriting support, broking, account management and related insurance operations.
• Investment and markets: investment operations, research, analysis and market-support roles.
• Financial advice and other regulated activity: some roles involve activities subject to current Financial Conduct Authority rules and competence requirements.

Research the activity, not only the job title

1. Choose a specific role cluster. “Finance” is too broad to define one entry route or one set of requirements.
2. Read current vacancies and role profiles. Compare the actual tasks, customer contact, systems, technical knowledge and evidence employers request.
3. Separate transferable capability from role-specific requirements. Accuracy, analysis, communication, judgement and problem solving may transfer across roles, while some activities require specific current qualifications, supervision or professional standards.
4. Map your evidence. Examples might include handling financial information accurately, analysing data, identifying an error, explaining complex information, improving a process, working with controls or supporting a customer decision.
5. Verify regulated requirements before committing. Do not rely on an old job-title list or assume that every finance role follows the same professional route.

Evidence you can explore

Depending on the role, useful evidence may include working accurately with numbers or financial information, identifying patterns or risks, explaining information clearly, handling confidential material responsibly, resolving customer issues, following controls, checking work, using spreadsheets or finance systems, meeting deadlines, or making evidence-based recommendations.
